Some Easy Tips for Self-Help Anger Management

E-mail Print PDF
If you're trying your own self-help anger management techniques and methods, you're to be commended but cautioned. It's good that you're concerned about your temper and are trying to get it under control but you also need to understand how difficult it can be to go it alone.

There are many so-called experts who give advice when it comes to self-help anger management and this advice is either useless or downright damaging. For instance some say that when you're angry you should let it out by bashing a pillow or something else, but in reality this can just train your body to expect a release every time your temper flares. So if there's no pillow around, then what? You can actually feel more frustrated and irritated because you've trained yourself for that release. So there are times when you need to use caution with self-help anger management techniques.

Getting to the root of your anger

Getting to the root of your anger is a big part of self-help anger management techniques. For instance many people think they're mad at their boss or traffic or their spouse or children, but in reality they're afraid of losing their job and not being able to get another one. This fear keeps them on edge all day so that everything someone says or every little thing that happens makes them angry and upset. Do you see yourself in this?

Be Honest and understanding

If you're honest with yourself, an important part of self-help anger management, you may find that you're really angry at your parents for a bad childhood, at someone you knew that died and "left you," at the fact that you made a bad decision when it comes to your career, or something else. Understanding the real cause of causes of your anger is an important step toward addressing and controlling that anger. This can be a scary step when facing self-help anger management techniques on your own but it's an important one.

Do not make wrong assumptions.

Developing some understanding and acceptance is also important when applying self-help anger management techniques. Often we get angry because we make wrong assumptions about why a person is the way they are or why they're doing something in particular, but understanding their real motives or working on assuming positive things rather than negative ones can help tremendously with anger issues.
Also, sometimes we just need to accept things that are happening around us and people the way they are; stubbornly insisting that things be the way we want or that other people change according to our preferences is immature and unhealthy. Not many self-help anger management techniques will tell you this because most people just don't want to hear it, but it's absolutely true!

So keep these things in mind when working on self-help anger management. Remember that anger comes from within so of course changing it and controlling it also comes from within. People often don't want to admit to themselves that they're the problem but this is a large part of effective self-help anger management.
