Some Reasons Why You May Have Night Sweating

E-mail Print PDF
Do you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat? Or do you find that you're covered in perspiration when you get up in the morning? Cases of night sweating are not pleasant and may even interrupt one's sleep, but rarely are they serious. Let's take a look at some common reasons as to why someone might experience night sweating and see if any of these may apply in your case.

Digestive Problems

Digestive problems are one common reason for night sweating. When the body is overwhelmed with too much food in the stomach or digestive system, it needs to work hard to break down this food and work it through the system. One way it does this is by sending more blood to the stomach and intestines so that it can better do this job. Blood and oxygen are important elements in digestion and both are needed to break down food and work it through the system. In order to produce more blood, the heart will work harder and will pump faster. This in turn will raise the body's temperature, causing night sweating. While this is often not a problem for many, overeating can cause digestive problems if done on a regular basis. Too much food means not just more blood and oxygen in the system but more stomach acid being produced as well. Especially at night do people have a tendency to get acid reflux, where that stomach acid spills back up into the esophagus. This is a very dangerous condition as it can cause lesions and other problems with the esophagus and throat area. So if your night sweating is caused by overeating, it's possible that you're also causing other physical problems as well. You might in a case like this, when you have too much food in your belly and night sweating as well, consider that perspiration as being a symptom of a digestive problem.

Causing Own Night Sweating

It's also possible that you're causing your own night sweating by your environment. Bedrooms are notoriously stuffy and they usually get overly warm as well. You might not notice it when you first walk in the room but as you stay there all night, under blankets, you may get very warm without realizing it. Being anxious and nervous can also cause night sweating as these tension-causing incidents can creep into the mind during sleep. Bad dreams often cause the heart to race, which also causes an increase in body temperature and then of course night sweating. To combat this, take some time before bed to do some meditating on positive events or to engage in something you enjoy - reading, knitting, doing a crossword puzzle, or something else to calm you mentally and emotionally. You may find that when you're calmer mentally and emotionally before you actually get into bed then you'll be calmer all night. This in turn can help you sleep better and can keep you from experiencing night sweating as well.
