Planning a Great Fly Fishing Trip for the Whole Family

E-mail Print PDF
Are you looking to bring your entire family with you on your next fly fishing trip?  Having your kids with you when out on the river or lake is very different than being out there fly fishing on your own.  While your kids might be enthused about fly fishing or may be able to entertain themselves near the river while you fish, for other families there may be some other things to consider in order for everyone to have fun during the fly fishing trip.  Here are few simple tips to remember when planning your family vacation.

Activities Available During Your Fly Fishing Trip

First, do some research to make sure that there are other activities available during your fly fishing trip.  That preferred lodge or cabin might offer horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, or other outdoor activities.  If they don't, check out the nearby areas as there may be other resorts that do.  If you have other activities available during your fly fishing trip the kids especially aren't likely to get bored.  Don't just assume that there will be things to do even if you choose a nice lodge in a beautiful area.  Sometimes places that cater to fly fishing anglers are very far off from the beaten path and somewhat isolated.  This works for the anglers but not for those that want to do something else while there!  So do your homework before you go and you may have a more enjoyable fly fishing trip for everyone.

Don't Force Your Family on Fly Fishing Trip

Remember too that you don't want to force fly fishing on your family even if you're been looking forward to the whole family participating in your fly fishing trip.  You might assume your boys will love it whereas they may prefer to explore the areas around the river or might want to do some horseback riding or something else.  Consider that fly fishing is appreciated by most grownups for being very relaxing, and "relaxing" to the grownups usually means "boring" to the kids!  You might be eager and excited about sharing your beloved hobby with the kids but give them some space if they don't take to it right away or just don't like it altogether.  You want your fly fishing trip to be enjoyable for everyone and that means being considerate if it's just not something they like.

Think About Choosing Your Lodge or Cabin

Another thing to consider is that not everyone in the family will appreciate the very rustic setting that is common for a fly fishing trip.  Think about this when choosing your lodge or cabin; there are many that are like nice hotels with all the amenities you could imagine and then some that are so rustic they don't even have indoor plumbing!  And of course there are many that fall somewhere in between these two extremes.  So take your time when planning your accommodations for your fly fishing trip and pick something that will be fine for everyone rather than just assuming that the family won't mind staying in a very rustic cabin!
