Tips for Choosing the Right Fly Fishing Waders

Fly Fishing WadersJust like virtually any other hobby or sport, fly fishing requires some specialized gear and clothing.  Since most anglers stand right in the water when fly fishing, of course you can't just wear your blue jeans or shorts and expect to be comfortable all day.  Running rivers and streams are typically very cold even on the warmest of summer days, so getting some good fly fishing waders that will keep you warm and dry is going to be very important.  If you're new to the sport you might be confused as to what you should look for since there are so many options when it comes to fly fishing waders, but we can give you some quick tips and pointers in this regard.

Fly Fishing Waders

First, remember that your fly fishing waders should be very roomy.  Not only will you be wearing your pants underneath them but on colder days you might even opt for some thermal underwear as well.  This means that you'll need all that extra room not just for a good fit but so that you can still walk around while you're all bundled up!  Your fly fishing waders aren't like typical pants where you just want room enough to be comfortable but they should be extra spacious.  If you're going to make a mistake in this regard it's better to make them too big than too little!

Stocking Feet

Many fly fishing waders have boots built into their feet but some are called "stocking feet" meaning they end at the ankle and you'll need to purchase boots separately.  This is good for those who have waterproof boots but both types of waders are usually just as effective.  There are also those with a bib like overalls and some that just come up past the waist and tie.  These different types of fly fishing waders are just meant for those who may have a good fishing vest that works better when there's no bib, while others just prefer the bib type - on the hottest of summer days you may be able to forego an extra jacket or vest if the bib keeps you warm enough.

Pockets and Loops with D Rings

Having plenty of pockets and loops with D rings is necessary for fly fishing waders.  You'll need lots of places to keep things like your keys, lip balm, pliers or cutters for when hooks get imbedded in the mouth of a fish, and of course your net will need to hook somewhere.  Some also fish later in the day and may need a flashlight as well.  And of course a good power bar can keep you going for hours!  So look for these small pockets and loops when shopping for fly fishing waders.

Try Different Pairs of Fly Fishing Waders

Take your time to shop and try on a few different pairs of fly fishing waders; you should be able to walk around the sporting goods store a bit before purchasing to make sure they fit properly and that you're comfortable with their overall feel.
