I'm often asked what's the best way to learn fly-fishing by people who've been bitten by the fishing bug and are very keen to get going with this rewarding and relaxing hobby. I think you have to look to yourself to answer that question, and ask "How do I like to learn?"
For myself, I learned fly-fishing from my Uncle and Grandfather, both of whom enjoyed nothing more than packing up their equipment and driving off for a weekend away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. I loved the opportunity of seeing new places, and of course the thrill of feeling a fish bite, then the joy of reeling it in.
This was all before the internet took off, of course. Now someone looking to take up fly-fishing can learn from books, videos, audiobooks or go back to basics and learn from a tutor or experience friend.
I decided to put a lot of my fly-fishing knowledge into my how to guidebook, "Get Your Fly On", so that I could help as many people as possible to hone their fishing skills - there's only so many people you can help face to face. I did that as a book and as an audiobook, because I found some people liked reading the book, and because they could print it out, they could make their own notes in the margins - it became a working document if you like. Other people liked playing my fly-fishing audiobook in the car on the way to their favourite fishing spot.
One thing I've not had chance to create yet is a video of my knowledge - I guess I don't think I'm that photogenic
, and looking at things like youtube - finding things out on the internet by watching a video is getting more and more popular.
That's when I stumbled across this product - it's an ebook and video tutorial for fly-fishing, called "Fly Fishing From Scratch", which I think is fantastic - so good I wish I had written it myself!
As I'm "in the trade", I asked the author, Henry Holderness for a copy to review. As he's an man who has a passion for fly-fishing and sharing his knowledge, he was delighted to send me an evaluation copy.
I've got to say, I was impressed.
It covers all the basics like:
- essential equipment and how to use it properly - so you don't waste money on gear that won't help you catch more, big fish!
- what fly rod "action" you need to use for what type of rod and why
- the exact differences between 2 piece and 4 piece rods... and which rod is best for you and why!
- a video demonstration of casting which is fantastic - it's not easy to put the idea of controlled, accurate movements across in writing - with the video you can see it right away
- Should you use a line that floats or sinks?
- Stalking trout from the bank - five different tips just on that alone!
- All about the various kinds of knots used in fly fishing, what kind of loop to tie and when, whether youare tying them yourself, or purchasing fly lines with a small loop built-in at the tip.
There's so much in there I can't describe everything, but it you think a book and video course will suit how you like to learn, why not check out "Fly-fishing from Scratch". It's risk free, because like my Guide to Fly-Fishing,ifyou're not satisfied (for any reason, even if it is becauseyou don’t like the pictures), you’ll receiveall yourmoney back. - So what are you waiting for!
Happy Fishing!
