Tips to Relieve a Tension Headache

E-mail Print PDF
Do you think you have a tension headache? If so you may very well be right. Tension is a very common cause of headaches; we even talk of a problem or stressor as being a headache itself. How often have you heard someone refer to their job or their marriage or their own mother as being a real headache? But just knowing that you have a tension headache isn't always comfort enough; you may need to know how to get rid of that terrible affliction, and it would be nice if you could get rid of it now!

Understand the Cause of Your Tension Headache

You may want to first understand the cause of your tension headache before you simply try to address the symptoms alone. Suppose you have a big project you need to work on at the office and get that pain in your head every time you think about. You might want to consider taking a few minutes to review all your notes and your progress so far so that you can reassure yourself that you're on track. This can alleviate a lot of your stress and help you reduce your tension headache. If you have a friend or family member that gives you stress, try to prepare yourself every time you're going to run into this person. Understand that they're just imperfect and maybe even a little difficult; concentrate on their good qualities and try to steer the conversation toward something you both enjoy. Taking positive steps like these can cut down on the number of tension headaches you may get.

Take Your Mind off Things

Taking your mind off of things can also help to alleviate a tension headache. Learn some new hobbies or activities that you can engage in to keep you active and even distracted from the cause of your pain. When you get home from work, put it out of your mind and go for a walk at night or take the family swimming. Ride your bike, knit a scarf, make a scrapbook, or go to the craft supply store and buy a kit of something you can build on your own. You can't always fix or eliminate whatever it is in your life that's creating your tension headache but you can learn how to control your own thoughts. Dwelling on the negative and letting it take over everything you're thinking is just going to make things worse. But if you work on concentrating on other things you may see that your tension headache is greatly alleviated.

Homemade Remedies

You can of course use homemade remedies for a tension headache such as a cold cloth, a good massage, or a hot bath. These things can force your body to relax and help your headache to go away. Alleviating tension throughout the body can help the tension headache to go away as well. But whatever you do, don't rely too heavily on medications as these can have serious and harmful side effects, even those that are purchased at your local pharmacy.
