Some Important Tips to Remember About Greenhouses

E-mail Print PDF
Are you shopping around and trying to decide from the many choices of greenhouses that you have for your own home?  If so then you're a very lucky individual; greenhouses add not only aesthetic value to a home but provide a way to enjoy a relaxing and fulfilling hobby all year round.  Those who are fortunate enough to have such a structure often report that they don't know how they ever lived without it!

How Do You Make Your Choice?

When trying to decide between the many different styles and models of greenhouses, how do you make your choice?  There are a few important tips and pointers to remember, and if you take these into consideration you're sure to make the best decision.

Consider the Frame Material

For one thing, you really want to consider the frame material that's often used for the construction of greenhouses.  Many people prefer wood greenhouses because they look so nice, especially with glass panes.  Home that have a very dark exterior also seem to look better with a wooden frame.  But there are some drawbacks to wood.  One is that it doesn't last as long as plastic.  It can also begin to rot in very humid environments.  It often doesn't stand up to the elements as well as other materials used for greenhouses.  If you live in a very harsh environment or one that is very humid you might want to consider a plastic frame.

Type of Panes You Choose

The type of panes you choose is also important.  Glass may look nicer than plastic panes but doesn't offer as much insulation, so it too is not quite as functional.  The sturdiest greenhouses are those with plastic frames and plastic panes.  While this might not have been your first choice of materials these are usually the most durable and functional of all materials used for greenhouses.

Sizes Does Matter

Size does matter too when it comes to greenhouses.  You don't want something that will overwhelm your yard space or that will compete for attention with your house.  While the structure is meant to trap heat from the sun, during winter months it's often necessary to use a space heater at night to keep your plants warm.  The larger your structure, the more heat is needed and this means a larger utility bill.  So be modest when choosing between greenhouses and remember that you don't necessarily need to get the largest one that you technically can afford.  Getting something that will fit in nicely with your yard and home will be a better complement and will look nicer from the outside.

Don't Get Overwhelmed With Your Choices

It's very easy to get overwhelmed with your choices when it comes to greenhouses, but remember that the large variety offered means that you can find something that's perfect for you, regardless of your budget or size of your yard.  You can even choose a lean-to option which is designed to fit up against the side of your house or garage.  With all the different varieties of greenhouses, you simply need to pick the one that's best for you!
