Tips for Making the Most of Temporary Jobs

E-mail Print PDF
Searching for a job today is serious business and many are forced to work temporary jobs while still looking for that perfect position for them. These jobs may not be very glamorous and might mean working behind a register, doing cleaning work, babysitting or child care, or doing some filing in an office. While these things might seem a bit mundane or tedious, remember that sometimes temporary jobs can lead to positions that are more permanent and to other opportunities as well. It's never a good idea to dismiss temporary jobs or to act as if you can't wait until they're over since you never know how they'll turn out in the long run. Let's take a look at how you can make the most of these positions and put yourself in line for something permanent and lasting.

Treat Temporary Jobs as Actual Career Choice

For one thing, make sure that you treat temporary jobs the same as you would your actual career choice or path. If you take your responsibilities seriously and act like a professional, and are sure to do a good job while working, your employer will appreciate this as much as anything else. If there are any permanent positions that he or she may need to fill, you may be on the list of candidates because of your great attitude and hard work ethic. It's not unusual for temporary jobs to turn into permanent spots even if the employer hadn't considered it simply because he or she was that impressed with the employee and doesn't want to lose their contribution to the workplace. You have nothing to lose by acting like a professional and everything to gain, so think of any temporary jobs as being prospective permanent jobs and they may just become so!

A key to the path for permanent jobs

While working your temporary jobs you also want to be on the lookout for something permanent. Use the experience you're getting at your temporary position to help you with your permanent prospects. Tell potential employers about what you're doing now and stress that you're working something temporary because you're a hard worker; they may appreciate hearing that you're using your downtime to stay active and employed rather than simply sitting at home drawing unemployment. You might also find that temporary jobs teach you some skills or give you some experience you had never imagined, which in turn might put you on a career path you had never expected. Working at a retail store might lead to a career in retail purchasing or working at a daycare might make you think about opening your own facility.

Learn new skills and gain experience.

Don't dismiss temporary jobs or act as if they're a waste of time. They provide much more than an income; they can give you experience and teach you new skills. They can also open the door to permanent positions that you might not have imagined. Of course much of this will rely on you and your attitudes and habits while working any temporary jobs that you might have.
