Some Tips and Advice for a Happy Marriage

E-mail Print PDF

Anyone over a particular age can get married; having a happy marriage is of course quite a different story!  Apparently it is quite a struggle to have a healthy and thriving relationship since today half of all marriages still end in divorce, and of course this doesn't mean that the other half are staying together because they have a good marriage!  It seems as if having a happy marriage is quite a feat. So what can you do if you want to improve your relationship and not just stay married but really enjoy your relationship as well?  Here are a few simple tips and bits of advice.

Don't Assume for Happy Marriage

For one thing, don't assume that a happy marriage will just happen.  Some couples think that working on a marriage should be unnecessary and that it should happen automatically.  But think about when you were dating - your relationship didn't just happen but you really worked at it, whether you realized it or not.  You planned for time together and did all sorts of things to make your partner happy.  To have a happy marriage you're going to need to do that much work as well.  It takes some planning on your part and some real effort to make your spouse feel special and appreciated, but their feelings are part of that happy marriage.  When you put forth the effort needed to make them feel like part of a real partnership, they will no doubt return that same behavior.  It will also make you feel more positive toward them.

Happy Marriage Starts with Each Person

Remember too that a happy marriage starts with each person as an individual. People that are very critical, demanding, who argue all the time, or who always find fault are difficult to be around and don't make for good marriage mates.  Be honest with yourself about how this might apply to you.  Negative personality traits are going to cause friction in the marriage, and you need to take responsibility for yourself in this regard.  Ask yourself if you have some personality flaws that are in the way of that happy marriage, and how many positive personality traits you have that contribute to your partnership. This can be difficult as most people hate to think of their own flaws and faults, but it's imperative.  One person working on problems cannot make a happy marriage; it requires both partners to do this.

Being Realistic

Being realistic is also part of having a happy marriage.  You may have been dreaming of that perfect mate and what he or she would be like and what your relationship would be like, but ask yourself if your thoughts are very realistic at all or are more what you would see in a Hollywood movie.  Everyone has faults and flaws and failure to accept this is not going to lead to a happy marriage.  Remember, your spouse didn't get a perfect mate either! So be realistic and be adult about your expectations with one another.
