Are You Having Relationship Problems? Try This!

E-mail Print PDF
If you're in any sort of relationship, there's a good chance that things aren't perfect.  Whether it's a marriage or a long-time companionship, virtually everyone experiences relationship problems at one time or another.  While many of these problems are just normal stresses and strains that everyone experiences, some are more serious and need to be addressed directly before they actually end the relationship!  But people are often at a loss as to what to do; they want to do something, anything, to save the relationship but really don't know where to turn.  So if you're experiencing relationship problems and aren't sure what to do, we can help.  Here are a few simple bits of advice you might want to consider.

Remember The Relationship Problems

First, remember that relationship problems often begin when two people forget that they're no longer single and are really part of a partnership.  If you're in a relationship then you need to act as if you are in a relationship and stop acting as if you're still single.

Think of Your Partner's Opinions

Too often people do what they want without even thinking of their partner's opinions or needs, and even if they know their words and actions will bother that person!  This type of selfishness is often the root of many relationship problems.

Taking The Other Person Into Consideration

This isn't to say that when you're in a relationship that you should never get your way or get what you want or need, it simply means taking the other person into consideration before you speak or act.  Both partners need to make some compromises and it's usually best to think about taking turns when it comes to getting your way.  This means that this weekend your partner will pick what you do on Saturday night and next weekend you get your pick.  This year you go on vacation where you want and next year it's your partner's choice.  Many relationship problems can be avoided if both partners feel as if they will get their choice or their "turn" just as much as the other person, and of course sometimes this is needed when a compromise just cannot be reached.

Some Relationship Problems Stem From Behavior

Sometimes relationship problems stem from behavior that is much more than just thoughtless but that can be called pure selfishness.  If one person stubbornly insists on their own way and never gives their partner any consideration then they really don't deserve to be in a relationship in the first place.  Some relationship problems just can't be fixed if only one person is working on those problems.  It's important that both partners realize this and both partners are willing to work at things, rather than one saying that he or she doesn't need to make any changes while their partner does.  Many relationship problems are the fault of both persons equally and not just one or the other, so both need to be willing to do some work.  So be honest with yourself if you're having relationship problems and make sure you're willing to do your part to address those problems.
